“Are you sure this is the right house? Looks empty.”

I say breaking the silence between us. He lets go of my hand and peeks through the window on

the door. There’s obviously nobody here. It’s dark as hell in there.

“Shit. They told me to come a long time ago; I guess I took too long. I’m sorry; I thought for sure

I would be able to turn your early night into a long one.”

He says turning around to face me.

I can see his eyes now because of the light on the back porch and they look like sapphire

blue…just deep blue eyes that are intense and intimidating. It seems as though he can see right

through me with those piercing eyes of his so I get fidgety again. He obviously knows I’m staring

at him. God, I have to get away from this guy, I am a blabbering and fidgety idiot in front of him.

I don’t know how much more I can embarrass myself.

“No biggie. This is actually the most fun I’ve had all night, so I should be thanking you,

Jason…uh....Jason..?” I ask because I want to know his last name to make sure I stalk him on

the internet. Wow I’m a tool.

“Roberts. Jason Roberts” He responds with a smirk.

“Well Jason Roberts. Would you like to walk me to my dorm room so that I can start my early

night?”

I say with a voice that’s supposed to be flirty but I think sounds more like I’m a nervous wreck,

which I am, but he doesn’t have to know that. I look down at my feet because that was the worst

attempt at flirting.

I feel the intensity of his eyes on me “of course, Alexandra….Alexandra….uh…?”

I look up at his smiling face “Angel…Alex Angel”

I return his smile.

“Nice. Interesting name. I like it, Alexandra Angel…shall we?”

AUTHOR BIO:

I was born in Honduras but raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin from a very early age. I went to St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI before joining the U.S. Navy in 2006. After my short career in the military, I got married and started having kids. I have two munchkins now J I’ve been a stay at home mom for a couple of years. This past Christmas, my husband got a Nook Color as a gift and he never got to use it because it was always glued to my hands. I never liked reading but once I picked up that Nook—I was addicted. So I’ve read a TON of books and it’s become my getaway. I started writing as a hobby but after I finished Stay, my husband encouraged me to get out there…so here I am. I love

listening to music and find it inspirational and I think that it goes hand in hand with writing.

Caly's Piece by J.M Miller {Review}

Caly knew her mom would punish her; in fact, she'd planned on it. But a late-night ride in the backseat of a cop car wasn't part of that plan. Seventeen-year-old Caly Monroe has one passion: graffiti. Her mom hates it. And that's precisely why Caly decides to spray paint a barely dressed portrait of her mom in the middle of town, hoping to change her perspective―or maybe it was just to piss her off. After Caly's mom picks her up from the police station, she banishes Caly to Gemstone Beach, the run-down bay beach where they used to live each summer. The last time Caly stepped a bare foot onto that beach's crusty sand was five years ago, before her mom opened a bakery and permanently ended their vacations. When Caly returns, she is tasked with manual labor at the boardwalk as punishment; though, she soon discovers the real punishment is facing the people she once cared most about, including her first love, Aden. While Caly continues to contemplate her artistic future, she has to let her heart choose what, and who, is worth fighting for.

My take:

I haven't read a book yet that has made me nostalgic for my childhood until I read Caly's Piece. Playing flashlight tag, eating creamsicles on the beach, first kisses and young love. This book made me want to find a Delorean and go back to the Summer of '89 and relive all those magic moments. I really, really enjoyed this book you guys!

It opens up with 17 yr old Caly Monroe running from the cops after tagging a 50 foot portrait of her mother on the side of her bakery. What she ends up putting on the business is hilarious!

~The classic Pin-up model wore an over sized baker's cap over her curled blond hair, with a red and white checkered bikini top and matching mini skirt. Her puckered lips were stained Corvette red and she held a large muffin in front of her crotch. Pink and Black words arched over her head: Eat My Muffin

 NO wonder her mother is pissed off! Once the police take her to the station she is questioned about other tagging's in the surrounding areas. When he mother comes in to get her she informs the 5.0 they don't have the right to question her daughter and ends up not pressing charges in exchange for Caly painting over the picture. Cally is devastated that her mother doesn't appreciate her talent. As punishment her mother sends her to stay with her grandfather where she used to spend her summers as a kid, without her computer and cell phone plus she is supposed to do chores instead of enjoying her summer.

Caly hasn't been back to Gemstone beach since she was 12 but she definitely remembers Aden Clark, the boy who shared her first kiss. When she sees him again she is reminded of everything they used to have during the summers. She secretly hopes they can pick up where they left off until she discovers he has a girlfriend. When she comes face to face with her old friend Tara and discovers she is Aden's main squeeze she is heartbroken but determined to finish her summer of purgatory and move on. Tara tries to befriend her again and along with her clone best friend Lydia they spend a day out on her boat. Once they all get onto the opposite beach Caly is distracted by her hatred for her bathing suit when Tara and Lydia peel out and leave her stranded. Her grandfather and his friend end up rescuing her hours later once they realize she didn't come back with Tara.

On top of all this humiliation Caly has to help rebuild the local boardwalk alongside Aden which makes her growing attraction to him even harder to handle. The only saving grace is her real friendship with Aden's sister Ava. Together they stick together and grow closer as they find common interests and shared experiences. Caly lets Ava see her private notebook full of her designs, something she has never let anyone else see before. Ava is immediately wowed by Caly's talent and insists she open up a facebook page to showcase her work. When Caly disagrees Ava takes it upon herself  to get Caly's name out there and the response is phenomenal. Caly and Aden start to reconnect when an unexpected surprise throws everything into a tailspin.

This was a book that had heart and a great story. I loved Caly's character. This girl had serious balls when it came to expressing herself even when it ultimately got her in trouble. She was believable and real. Being in her world was humiliating and wonderful in a way that I could relate to, especially how awkward my childhood was. She doesn't have many friends and her mother is a bitch so you really fall in love with Caly. Her mother is the catalyst to this story, all Caly wants is for her mother to notice her talent and support her. What she gets is distance and heartache. I hated her mother throughout the entire story and there wasn't one thing she did that was redeemable in my eyes. Even when they worked everything out between them. 

What I loved was the friendship Caly made with Ava and Alex (Aden's brother). Ava was spunky and mean but vulnerable in many ways. After the loss of their father she became hardened and closed off until her and Caly became friends. I loved watching these two misfits come together. I have a soft spot for Underdogs in stories like this. Alex was hilarious and you could tell the way he flirted with Caly was to get under Aden's skin and thankfully it worked! ADEN! God I loved this boy! He was sweet and lovable, even when he lost his damn ever loving mind being with Tara. That's one bitch I would like to pull a dirty Sanchez on! When her and her friend Lydia left Caly stranded on the beach with no way home I had to put this book down and talk myself off the ledge. She was just an awful character and does something heinous that had me really worried towards the end of the book. I couldn't understand how sweet Aden could date someone like her. She was vile. 

The only thing that kept it from getting 5 stars for me, was how everything wrapped up at the end. It was good but it just seemed like things were too neat. There is a big reveal involving Caly's father that she just sort of accepted without much drama. I guess I was expecting her to freak out more with her being a teenager, and she had her moment but I guess I could have used a little more "oomph" in the drama department. I did like the ending though despite the lack of mega drama, and loved that things worked out for Caly and her artwork. I love how she made some real friends finally and ultimately found out who she is and what she wants. Caly's Piece is a fantastic feel good read that could be read on either a rainy day or at the beach while enjoying some drinks and hot lifeguards! Hello!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

J.M. Miller first discovered her love of writing in high school where she penned poetry for extra credit in English class, and even braved the anxiety of open-mic night at a local coffee shop. I love when a book leaves me feeling like I just had one of the most wonderful moments in life. It's magical to read a book that gets inside you. This was no exception. Violet Murphy and Gabe Parker have been best friends and loved each other since they were kids but seemed to miss their moment in time due to a misunderstanding. Each chapter begins with a journal entry from Violet's past. both her and Parker had tried taking their relationship to another level when they were 16 but something happened that hurt them both and the wounds never really healed. She had held out hope that they could get back together until a surprise announcement forced her to move on from her childhood Love. She convinces herself to move on and ends up meeting Landon. An incredibly sexy carpenter who treats her like gold and falls for her quickly. With Gabe set to marry Alicia, a woman Violet can't stand, she tries desperately to find out the truth about this woman before Gabe makes a mistake he can't take back. This was a book I won't soon forget because it had me frustrated and torn through most of the story. Seeing how Gabe and Violet grew up together makes your heart melt for him and you WANT them to be together and root for Alicia to be kicked to the curb. Then when you don't expect it Landon comes in to the picture and completely shakes things up. It's almost like a love triangle and usually I hate love triangles but this worked for me. While I still loved Landon and hoped briefly it worked out for them, I just couldn't stop myself from wanting Gabe to be with Violet. Whenever Vi tried to tell him the reason for the misunderstanding they would get interrupted and I would beat my fist against my desk at work and scream "COME ON!" I was so frustrated and it didn't change until like 87% into the book. The angst is palpable and becomes a living organism that feels like it could climb out of your chest and be your constant companion. Violet was a beautiful character. She had flaws and emotional baggage you start to understand as you get to know her. I figured out the big secret pretty early on and that usually deflates the balloon for me but with this book it just made me that much more excited to continue reading because I knew that if it just came out everyone could go back to normal. I love that the story was told from Violet's point of view, it really gives you insight into the emotional turmoil she goes through from past to present day. The journal entries before each chapter were a great way to get some back story without having to drag the story down during the good parts. I absolutely loved Violet. She is curvy and funny and spunky and with her two roommates whom you get to see quite a bit of in the story, you are not only provided with much needed comic relief but you get to see the support group Vi has in these girls. As for Gabe, I loved him then I didn't like him so much, but then I started loving him again. You are taken on this journey and begin to feel the emotions towards him the main character feels. It feels like it is happening to you as you read along. I couldn't put this book down and loved every pulse pounding, frustrating, anger management class inducing minute. The epilogue is a wonderful treat as it closes out this beautiful story from Gabe's POV that will have you misty eyed and unable to forget the story. I fell hard for this story, so much so that when it was over I cried. Not because it was sad, but because I was sad it was over. I moped for days being in a state in between being happy I read such a wonderful story and melancholy that it was over. I was pitiful and I am so glad nobody saw me like that. I adore stories about childhood sweethearts falling in love so naturally Keeping Secrets was right up my alley! My hope is that you grab a copy and get lost in the story like I did and fall in love with this beautiful couple!

My Thoughts:

What do you get when you put romance and heartache into a blender and add in a guy and a girl?

A felony most likely! LOL Ba doom Ching! Anyway Shattered was a beautiful story about what happens when tragedy changes your life. It's about a guy and a girl, Jesse Vaughn and Alyssa Boyd who both lost their best friend to an accident and how they struggle to pick up the pieces afterwards. Starting with Alyssa, I really felt her pain throughout the book because I know how it feels to lose your best friend. (Granted my Best friend was a dog but still). Losing someone you love more than anything else is very hard to deal with. After the death of her best friend Garrett, she is put on pills to help her cope with her grief but it ends up turning her into a lifeless shell.

The person I was off the meds was nothing compared to the zombie-like existence I led while on them.

That quote spoke to me because like Alyssa I too was a broken empty shell caused by the pain of loss and those pills they give you don't help at all they just shut you down emotionally. Alyssa, Garrett and Jesse were like the three musketeers until the accident claimed Garrett. After that Jesse took off for Florida leaving Alyssa feeling alone and abandoned. After nine months of grieving and trying to survive Jesse comes back throwing her world into chaos as she tries to deal with him being back, why he left in the first place and her feelings for him which haven't gone away with time. I really loved Alyssa's character. I felt like I could understand what she was going through because I have been in a similar place as her. Having to take meds just to get through the pain of loss and trying to find something that will help you out of the darkness of despair. Her relationship with her mother has never been loving and comforting so she has no one but her girlfriend January and even that doesn't help because her friend is stuck up her mans ass 24/7. Alyssa acts out and starts depending on her medication to help her not feel anything as she flirts with danger in the form of the town man whore Collin Smolder. Thankfully though Jesse isn't going to let her do something she will regret.

“I’m sorry that you feel that way But, if you think for one minute I’m going to stand by and watch you act like a complete idiot, then you really have lost your goddamn mind.”

Jesse was amazing! He too has suffered after losing Garrett and on top of that his childhood wasn't pleasant with his parents never hanging around for long. He already has a complex about letting people into his life because he knows nobody stays for long. He has always silently been in love with Alyssa for years and never told her due to his fear. Him and Garrett would always look out for her and when he sees her running around with Collin he does his best to keep her from him. I fell so hard for Jesse in this book. Yes he was broken and left Alyssa when she needed him most but the boy had a fucked up set of parents that obviously left an impression on him. I wanted to snuggle him to my bosom and sing him a Lullaby lol. Wen you get to the part of why he REALLY left you get angry, or at least I did! I hated that part because he didn't want to go dammit! 

“Maybe it’d be best if you went without her. She needs time to heal and she's not going to be able to do that with you here.”

I love how the story went back and forth between both Jesse and Alyssa's perspectives. You got to see it from both of their sides and really got an understanding of how they both dealt with their emotions. Through flashback scenes you get a glimpse of how things developed between these two and fall in love with their story. The author gives you something to root for as you go, with these beautiful and sweet scenes between Alyssa and Jesse.

“I don’t care what anyone says about you, Jesse Vaughn, you are the sweetest boy I know.”

I’d bring her a milkshake every night if I got to see the smile that was on her face at that moment.

It was so amusing and frustrating to watch Jesse and Alyssa try to repair their relationship with both of them being stubborn. She is a major drama queen.

She cracked me up towards the end of the story when she got scared and started hyperventilating. Jesse had to calm her down with his tongue! HOLLA! Wish somebody would kiss me when I start bitching and freaking out! Jesse wasn't completely innocent either, this boy was hot headed and had a tendency to get pissed when provoked!

This was such a beautiful story and I found myself getting sucked into it with every chapter. It wasn't as depressing as you would think if you just based your opinion on the title and synopsis. There were beautiful moments that took my breath away and I will certainly never look at broken glass the same way again.

Yes there were sad moments but the beauty that bloomed from the pain of the main characters brought tears to my eyes and made me feel like a big mushy pile of soggy oatmeal lol! From beginning to the beautiful end I enjoyed every minute of this book and am now draggin' ass tired because I couldn't put it down long enough to sleep!! The only thing about this book that might trip you up are a few minor spelling issues, other than that though you should really add it to your must read list!
