High school senior Liv Evans has one rule: No attachments. She’s lost enough in her life and has vowed to do whatever it takes to make sure she never again feels the emptiness of losing someone she loves. Boys are a fun distraction, but a serious relationship is something she’d rather live without. Her determination for a future free of pain and heartbreak is put to the test when she meets–and quickly forms an unexpected bond–with Logan Tanner.

Logan has always been a free spirit, but ever since a life-changing event took place, which left him doubting the integrity of those who are closest to him, he’s taken that term to a whole new dangerous level. Learning the hard way that life is too short for worries or work–and that women can’t be trusted–Logan has exchanged steady work for street racing. When Liv walks into his world, everything he thought he knew about life and women is challenged.

In The Fine Line, Liv and Logan will discover if it’s possible for true love to have a future, or if history is destined to repeat itself.

The Fine Line was introduced to me by a friend and after reading her favorable review for it I decided to buy it. I'm not sure why it took me so long long to finally make time to read it it though because I was really excited to read it but I just kept pushing it back and pushing it back. The thought always nagged me until finally I just decided to stop putting it off and dive in.

The Fine Line begins by giving a small glimpse into the past of Liv Evans. From a young age she learned the hard way that people leave. Her dad, step dad and her mothers boyfriend whom she bonded strongly with all left and didn't really look back. One of the dudes actually bit the dust so technically it's not his fault but it was enough to scar this poor girl for life. Losing people she loved has caused Liv to keep herself emotionally distant from others especially members of the opposite sex. Her plan has worked flawlessly for her up until Logan Tanner shows up and starts breaking down her carefully erected walls. Friendship is the only thing on the table at first but little by little they become closer than friends but with Logan's boner for danger racing cars and Liv's "No attachments" rule the odds are greatly stacked against them in this mildly angsty teen coming of age story.

Chicks like Liv are the kind of females I can get behind. Characters who are no stranger to heartache and pain. I get the grit. Liv's watched several men come in and out of her life and refuses to get close enough to be left again and I understood that about her because I'm the same way. I tend to keep people at a significant distance until a certain time has passed and I know they won't go anywhere after a while but Liv, she was hardcore N-O to almost everything. She's a good daughter and pretty responsible almost adult so her parents needn't worry about her being a teen mom because Liv won't let anyone get that close. Almost to a fault. I was behind Liv the majority of the time but after a while her whole "I won't let you in" schtick started to wear thin for me. Especially when she met Logan who wanted to be there for her through everything good or bad. Logan was an absolute sweetheart and I loved this guy so much. A ladies man by reputation you wouldn't think he'd be a sure bet but he totally proved himself worthy. Taking the friend route so not to scare Luv away was a selfless move on his part even though he wanted more but proved he was a decent guy. Slowly building Liv's trust by taking her to his races and spending time together and his overall patience were just a few reasons why fell for him.

Liv has to learn how to trust and I felt like she had a great deal of growth throughout the story even though I wanted to choke her a few times for being so off putting. She pushes people away so hard that it ended up causing a rift between her and Logan once they became an item. When his loyalty is called into question after an incident involving a girl he used to mess around with comes into play, their bond and the strength of their connection is tested. This whole scenario was kind of a head scratching moment for me because it felt as if the author just glanced over it without really explaining anything. You catch your man in bed with someone else and granted, he swears nothing happened and you ultimately believe him but suspect something fishy about how the the girl ended up with your man and you just shrug it off and keep going? That was something I needed to see hashed out either with a confrontation by Liv or at least some other acknowledgement down the road to satisfy my curiosity. It didn't fit Liv's character definition up until that point even though she had started to grow and mature. I didn't fully believe she was at the point of just letting it go just then but I digress.

Overall though, The Thin Line was a nice little story with some mild dramatic elements that often times felt a little melodramatic but wasn't overdone. Logan and Liv had an endearing romance despite the troubles they faced. I enjoyed watching Liv open up to her mother about coping with the grief of losing the people she loved. The mother daughter bonding was adorable and sweet. This was a wonderful escapist read so if you need something to take your mind off your everyday challenges, The Thin Line will absolutely do that for you.

Quotes:

History has shown that, for me, having a mutual love for another person means having to say goodbye. It was like some sort of cruel genetic defect. Loc. 1996

“I don’t know what it is, but being with you just feels good. It feels right. It’s better than any-fucking-thing I’ve ever known.” Loc. 2775

“You are my best friend,” I confessed as I held him. Then I pulled my head off his chest and brought my palms to his face, looking into those beautiful hazel eyes, with my lips inches from his, and whispered, “I love you, Logan …I am in love with you…” I took a long, deep breath in. “Letting you go would be the biggest regret of my life.” Loc. 3153
