She’s running from the law, and the law wants her bad. The opportunity was just too damn delicious for Ginger Peet to pass up. The purse full of money she finds—$50,000 to be exact—could give her and her teen sister the new start they need. So she grabs the cash, her gothy sibling, and their life-sized statue of Dolly Parton, and blows outta Nashville in a cloud of dust. Chicago, here we come...Turns out, Chicago has some pretty hot cops. Hot, intense, naughty-lookin’ cops like Derek Tyler, who looks like he could eat a girl up and leave her begging for more. And more. Tempting as he is, getting involved with the sexy homicide lieutenant next door poses a teensy problem for a gal who’s on the lam. But one thing is certain—Derek’s onto her, and he wants more than just a taste. And as far as he’s concerned, possession is nine-tenths of the law.

My Take:
After reading His Risk To Take and loving it, I became a hardcore Tessa Bailey fan. This woman writes such amazing, hot stories I swear she could turn "Old McDonald" into an erotic nursery rhyme! Protecting What's His was HOTTER than Satan's taint in July!

Ginger is a tough cookie who has been raising her younger sister Willa since she was a toddler. With her mother being a deadbeat prostitute junkie, Ginger has had to resort to whatever it takes to not only keep Willa safe but to make sure she had food and clothes. She had to make sure nobody found out about their dire situation because she feared Willa would be taken away from her and she couldn't let that happen. Finally fed up with their current situation Ginger makes a quick decision when her mother comes home wasted with a purse full of money and passes out. I loved Ginger's character so much, I want to be her when I grow up! She was determined to make her sister's life better after being subjected to their mother's indiscretions all their lives. She was fiercely protective and strong willed, especially when she meets Derek Tyler, the hot cop who lives across the hall from them.

Derek was a seriously sexy beast. Dominant cop with a hot body and intense green eyes is a major win in my book. He comes in at a funny moment in the book when Ginger and Willa are moving in across the hall from his apartment. He's coming off a Whiskey bender trying to drown his sorrows over a one of his fellow officers being killed and the noise the sister's are making causes him physical pain. The humor of the situation with him hearing them call each other names like Skunk Vag and Donkey Queef was hilarious because you are experiencing this through his somewhat uptight eyes. Derek was a very intense character, always serious about everything including his job as Lieutenant. Leading an undercover mission to combat gangs in Chicago he gets sidetracked by the information he digs up on Ginger. From the moment he meets her he goes full caveman and starts to see her as his even if they haven't officially gotten together.

The heat between Ginger and Derek gets turned up to Mach 10 when a flood in their apartment forces them to stay with him until it's fixed. You know a book is hot when you have to put it down several times to play "Magic Button" and the author delivers some serious hot moments in this book. The buildup to the steamy scenes were almost as hot as the actual sex scenes. I'm not usually into dominant, aggressive guys but Derek can boss me around any day. The sexy things he says to Ginger had me panting and needy just as much as she was! I loved how Ginger made him work for it though. As hot as Derek was she made me proud when she resisted him several times, until of course when she couldn't anymore. I think the hottest part about their relationship was ginger losing her V-Card in a hot as shit moment with Derek that will definitely wet your whistle.

The main thing about this book that caught me off guard with it being so serious was the humor. It was packed with funny quips and name calling that made me feel the relationship between the characters, especially the sisters, was real and honest. They teased each other like sisters do and it came across so well in this story. Ginger had a fantastic sense of humor that helped Derek not be so serious all the time. I loved watching Ginger and Derek together but I also loved seeing her sister Willa get to have some endearing moments with him too. Willa was the supporting character in this book but she never felt that way at all. Her story tied into the two mains' very nicely and she even had her own moments in the spotlight involving a high school crush. Between hiding out from their mother and the drama that ensues when the person whose money Ginger stole comes to collect, Protecting What's his was an intense page turner from start to finish. I really enjoyed this story and I look forward to the next in the Line Of Duty series!

Quotes:
“Let me be clear, Ginger, since you insist on talking in circles. I want you underneath me in my bed. I want to be buried inside you so deep that I have to remind you of your own name. And I want those motherfuckers leering at you from the other side of the bar to smell me on you for a week afterward.” Loc. 482

“Listen, you ignorant bastard, I have some news for you. There are literally dozens of loser, backward-hat-wearing, fart-joke-telling sons of bitches exactly like you in this establishment right now. You are not unique in any way. In fact, you are boring the shit out of me with your predictability. So finish your goddamn drink and pack it up.” Loc 1801

"We had sex. People do it all the time. I don’t need you to write me a poem.” Loc. 1882

“If I could go back and do one thing differently that first night, I would taste your virgin pussy before I fucked you. I bet it would have been extra sweet.” Loc. 2525

  1. "Protecting What's His was HOTTER than Satan's taint in July." <--- Well if that doesn't sell the book, I don't know what would! I pre-ordered this, just haven't had the chance to read it yet.

    Another awesome review!
